It’s official: Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has won Game of the Year. Congratulations to Sandfall Interactive and Kepler Interactive for this award which, in my totally objective opinion as a player who spent 100 hours on it and unlocked every trophy, is well deserved. The game established itself among the greats, despite a budget and team size far smaller than international AAA titles.
The story is even sweeter when you remember that a remake of one of these major games (Oblivion Remastered, a monument of Western RPGs) was surprise-announced… two days before Expedition 33’s release. Exactly the kind of news that must have given Kepler’s marketing teams cold sweats.
In the end, everything worked out great for Expedition 33, which found its place, its audience, and even gained extra prestige. And perhaps, when you think about it, it was actually Oblivion that should have been afraid of Expedition 33 and avoided releasing at the same time.
⚠️ For studios releasing a game in the coming days, Expedition 33 just dropped an update, which will likely complicate your plans. (This is why I advise against releasing a game near a major event, to avoid shadowdrops, but we’ll talk about that in a future post 😉)
